The opening of 1941 found the Battalion continuing their training at Aldershot. The only real news was an outbreak of influenza that swept through the ranks in January. On January 20 the BW left to join the 5th Brigade as part of the defence of the Brighton area, where they open a month before returning to Aldershot. The Battalion moved again on July 3, this time to Willingdon, Sussex, near Eastbourne, for more training. At the end of September they took part in Exercise “Bumper”, which was the largest exercise up to that time (Hutchinson, p.205). The Battalion moved to Eastbourne in the middle of October to be part of the coastal defence (remember that the invasion of England by Germany was seen to be inevitable at the time).
