This was a year of continued training and coastal defence for the BW. They left East Wittering and moved back to Pulborough for Exercise “Spartan”, which ran from February 28 to March 12 (Hutchinson, p.217). The Battalion moved again on May 3, this time to Petworth, where they were most notably inspected by Her Majesty the Queen, Colonel-in-Chief of The Black Watch. From June to August they had more training and took part in Exercise “Harlequin” from August 21 to September 9 (Ibid, 218). This exercise was in preparation for the invasion of Europe. The BW moved to Hove, Sussex, where they remained for the rest of the year.
